CIRCLE IN THE SAND REPORT 2013

Entries in Wanderers St Faiths Petanque Club's 26th annual Circle in the Sand tournament at Walcott Beach were welcomed by fine weather and a terrain comprising an excellent sandy beach complete with areas of shingle, water pools and rocky obstacles.

It was particularly pleasing that participants travelled from Bressingham, Bury St Edmunds, Cambridge, Diss, Morley St Botolph and the Norwich area for an event that has proved to be very popular over a number of years.

As expected the promoting Club provided 38% of total entries with the most recently formed Club Bressingham contributing with an excellent 16%.

Most pleasing about the entry was that bonus starts given to novices and young people up to junior level obviously had the desired effect and encouraged newcomers and young people to participate.

To counteract this 75% of entries were experienced players with 38% having represented the Anglia Region including five young people from Wanderers St Faiths who have also represented England in Junior Championships.

Club Vice-Chair Michael Hill welcomed supporters and friends to the event and Club Secretary Lynne Urquhart organised the draw to determine who the 27 pairs played in the 40 minute timed games over five rounds.

At the lunch break after just two rounds play only nine combinations were able to boost a 100% record, and after three rounds this was reduced to three, which remained the case until the conclusion of the event.

Winners were Keith Burgess and Glen Harcourt (Sprowston) with 5 wins +41, runners-up were Mick Sadler and Josh Wilcox (Wanderers St Faiths) 5 wins +26, third place were the 2012 champions Sally Sadler and Peter Griffiths (Bury St Edmunds) 5 wins +20 and fourth were Lisa Riches and Chris Hamlin with 4 wins +17. Also on four wins but just missing out on a trophy were Louis Smith and Dave Smith (Bressingham) 4 wins +14. Two teams recorded 3 wins and a draw and they were in sixth place Dean Wright and Georgie Wright (Wanderers St Faiths) 3 wins 1 draw +35 and seventh place the junior combination of Charlie Parker and Jessica Shoesmith (Wanderers St Faiths) 3 wins 1 draw +20.

Trophies were presented to the top four teams by Michael Hill who also expressed his appreciation to Lynne Urquhart for organising the event.

NINE BOULE TRIPLES 2013

Wanderers St Faiths Petanque Club attracted a good entry for their unique Nine Boule Triples tournament held at the St Faiths Centre.

The home club provided 45% of the entries with the remaining combinations from six other clubs and the Norfolk International Project, who made their debut in tournament play by entering two teams.

It was also pleasing to note that 40% of all entries were young people including four who have represented England at Junior International level.

At the conclusion of four 45 minute timed games the ultimate winners were the home club's Chloe, James and Bob Urquhart with maximum wins plus 35, including an impressive 10-3 victory over the third placed team.

An allsorts team comprising Dave Smith (Bressingham), Peter Astle (Great Yarmouth) and Richard Green (51 Club) also recorded four wins plus 23 and had to settle for the runners up spot.

Chris Peel and Pat Papworth (Red Lodge) with Daniel Shevlin (Norwich) claimed third place with three wins plus 24, whilst the home club's Jessica Shoesmith, Charlie Parker and Bill Truman finished fourth with three wins plus 8.

Fifth place was claimed by Michael Hill and David Barrell (Wanderers St Faiths) with Graham Beales (51 Club) who also recorded three wins with plus 5.

Presentation of trophies was made by the Club's Chairperson Louise Robinson who thanked all involved in the organisation of the event and participants for entering, as well as congratulating winners and presenting trophies.

The Club's next promotion is the Circle in the Sand Pairs tournament to be held on Walcott/Bacton beach on Sunday 4th August with 10.30am registration for 11.00am start.

WANDERERS 30TH ANNIVERSARY RUSSELL HARRIS FUN PAIRS 2013

Meticulous pre-planning by Committee ensured that Wanderers St Faiths 30th Anniversary event, the Russell Harris Fun Pairs, ran like clockwork.

With maintenance work on terrain and grounds already undertaken participants were welcomed from midday with a commemorative gift and free barbecue item.

Despite the fact that several Canaries supporters were not participating it was still necessary to use the overflow car park at rear of Centre to ensure that all entries could participate.

The home club accounted for 50% of the entries with seven other clubs providing the remaining participants.

It was apparent from quality of entry 40% Regional standard, 40% Club standard and 20% young people, that much would depend upon bonus starts and random draw to be undertaken prior to start, plus pre-selection of double score bonus round.

And so it proved to be with some benefitting from the luck of the draw and others competing against combinations that they did not particularly want to play. Some were able to build on bonus starts and others unable to pull them back.

At the conclusion there could only be one winning combination and that proved to be Dave Smith (Bressingham) with Enzo Diprata (Norwich) with 5 wins plus 36.

The '51' club combination of Graham Beales and Eileen Oliver claimed the runners up spot with a maximum 5 wins plus 32 but had to withstand a last round pressure game against Wanderers petanque club youngsters Curtis Hoy and Alex Reeve before recording a 13-12 victory.

Chris Peel (Exning) and Jerome Morais (Hethersett Sporting) finished in third place with 4 wins plus 31 despite losing a crucial match 7-13 to Chloe Urquhart and her dad Bob, another home club combination.

The final award for fourth place was won by eleven year old Amee Kennett, also of the home club, who was partnered by her dad Shaun, a former National Pairs Champion. They recorded four wins plus 28, the only match they lost was to last year's winners and another father and daughter combination Derek and Jessica Shoesmith.

Other top placings were:-

5th Charlie Parker – Bill Truman (Wanderers St Faiths) 4 wins plus 17
6th Luke Watling – Darren Watling (Bressingham) 4 wins plus 13
7th Jessica Shoesmith – Derek Shoesmith (Wanderers St Faiths) 4 wins plus 12
8th Les Shilling – Dan Shilling (Bressingham) 4 wins plus 12
9th Curtis Hoy – Alex Reeve (Wanderers St Faiths) 3 wins plus 24

Presentation of awards to the top four placings were made by Wanderers Petanque Club Chairperson Louise Robinson, who thanked all involved in pre-planning the event, maintenance work and on the day tasks, highlighting the need for commitment and teamwork. She also thanked everyone for attending the event.
